Airlangga’s journey to become King in East Java
Airlangga is the founder of the Kahuripan Kingdom which ruled from 1009 to 1042 with the title Sri Maharaja Rakai Halu Sri Dharmawangsa Airlangga Anantawikramottunggadewa.
- “Airlangga’s farewell with King Bedahulu”. The history of th Medang kingdom which will later be visualized in the media painting that when Airlangga said goodbye to the King Bedahulu. In his visual painting, there are several figures to be painted, namely: 1. Airlangga’s father named Udayana (King Bedahulu), 2. Airlangga’s mother named Mahendradatta (a princess from the Medang Kingdom), 3. Airlangga.
- “Airlangga’s Journey to become a King”. When Airlangga married his uncle’s daughter, Dharmawangsa Teguh (Mahendradata’s brother) and held a wedding party in Watan City, he was suddenly invaded by King Wurawari who came from Lwaram who was an ally of the Sriwijaya kingdom. At that time Dharmawangsa Teguh died on the battlefield and while Airlangga escaped and fled to the Wanagiri mountain forest accompanied by his assistant named Mpu Narotama. From the age of 16, Airlangga lived as an ascetic for 3 years, then Airlangga was visited by people who asked him to rebuild the Medang kingdom and Airlangga also built a new capital near Mount Penanggungan named Watan Mas and Airlangga ascended the throne in 1008. In this section Airlanga will be visualized as a king accompanied by Mpu Narotama and his people.
- “Airlangga become a ruler with the title of Sri Maharaja Rakai Halu Sri Dharmawangsa Airlangga Anantawikramottunggadewa”. In this section, Airlangga will be visualized occupying the throne of his kingdom accompanied by Mpu Narotama who was crowned Rakyan Kanuruhan whose name is Kanuruhan Mpu Dharmamurti Narottama Danasura.
In this painting, it will be visualized in glass media by approaching wayang decorative techniques.
